Governor of General Authority of Foreign Trade Praises Speech of Kingdom's Candidate for WTO's Director-General

Mr. Abdulrahman bin Ahmed Al-Harbi, Governor of the General Authority of Foreign Trade, praised the speech of Mr. Muhammad bin Mazyad al-Tuwaijri, Kingdom's candidate for the post of WTO's director-general, at the General Council and the global press conference held yesterday at the headquarters of the WTO in Geneva to discuss his future vision for the WTO. During an interview with Al Ekhbariya TV, he said: "The Kingdom's candidate discusses the challenges and issues that the WTO is facing. Moreover, he discussed its main missions including negotiations, settlement of conflicts, notifications, and transparency," emphasizing the WTO's need for redeveloping its work mechanisms as it lacks a performance measurement and control mechanism. He pointed out that the approach of the Kingdom's candidate combines a reform-based economic background and leadership skills focused on details and topics related to trade. Along with trade challenges between countries, Mr. Al-Harbi pointed out that the WTO's current mechanism and approach to negotiations fail to analyze the main roots behind the problems, adding that the Kingdom's candidate presented a clear approach and highlighted the importance of information examination, dialogue with members, ongoing communication, and identification of interests and challenges, which serves as a reason to achieve progress and close some files. He praised the proposals of Mr. Al-Tuwaijri regarding the promotion of political support and communication between member states, including holding an annual ministerial conference, which is currently held once every two years, as it greatly supports progress on the level of achievements, along with cooperation with other international organizations on the level of reports and statistics to support the members of the WTO. He stated that the Kingdom's candidate has addressed the most prominent issues currently facing the WTO, including the challenges of developing and least developed countries, the mechanism and conflict settlement entities, and the challenges that have emerged as a result of the imbalanced work mechanism of the WTO. He pointed out that the Kingdom's candidate focused on two aspects, with the first being the current challenges through the restructuring of the WTO's work mechanism to enable sound operation of main functions, and the second being refraining from ignoring some quick gains on the level of issues and negotiations at the WTO. On the success chances of the Kingdom's candidate, the Governor of the General Authority of Foreign Trade said: "I wish success to all candidates. However, I undoubtedly wish success to Mr. Muhammad al-Tuwaijri, representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, out of my belief, as a member of the WTO, in his program, expertise, qualifications, and reform achievements. I believe he is the man for the upcoming phase if members wish to achieve a global trade organization capable of keeping up with the current and future economic changes.
